The

are the latest releases
from
Wargames Atlantic:
Sci-Fi
Halflings are the latest ‘free agents’
team for their
Death fields
range.
Stealthy, cunning and barefoot,
each box of 24 figures comes with a
selection of four bodies, nine heads
(with various soft-hat options and
one smoking a pipe), lots of guns
– including a large selection of big
sniper rifles – and some extra items of
varied utility (including a very large
pack and a frying pan full of eggs...).
Halflings are – by tradition in fantasy
literature – very good at ‘disappearing’
into the woods (even without magic
rings...) and are effective with missiles:
stone-throwing especially. This has
been translated by
Wargames Atlantic
into the science fiction world with
this release. They are, of course, of
diminutive stature but – with their ‘no
shoes policy’ – that just makes them
all the better at camouflaged special
opps. They are priced at £24 a box but

DEAD OR ALIVE
Stargrave: Solo or Coop in Space
The latest release in this now copious
range is called
Dead or Alive
and it
gives
Stargrave
players all the tools
they need to generate solo bounty-
hunting scenarios, including a variety
of different settings and locations, a
host of complications to be faced, and
much more. There’s random scenario
generators and it can all be done Solo or
with Cooperative Play. The latter idea is
a welcome twist: two players can either
create one crew together (one player
should take on the role of the captain
and the other the role of the first mate)
or they can each create a half-sized crew.
This has the advantage of not fiddling
with the crew creation rules in the
main rulebook. Either way round, this
latest from
Osprey
and the pen of Joe
McCullough means your crew can have
even more fun travelling the galaxy,
hunting for outlaws and criminals with
a price on their heads and do it all when
no gaming friends are available! And
along with all of that there’s a Bestiary
full of new creatures (like a Giant Worm:
spicy!)

In 28mm it’s an impressive 70mm in
height and 65mm length (each of the
four pieces, I assume) and has some
nifty sculpting of the Lamassu as can
still be seen on many (surviving) relics.

components are 40mm high and 34mm

This represents the second
Wargames Atlantic
review in this months issue but these are too
good
not
to mention... And we hope to have
some to
give away
soon in the magazine! Four
different bodies (with legs) and six heads per
sprue make up to twenty bipedal, hairy half-
hound werewolves. They are classic, naked,
muscular types (think

in it’s ‘half-way’ state) and they

WARPAINT
Volume Two
In issue 490 we reviewed the copy of
Warpaint: A painting guide for Plains Indians,
specifically for the shield and horse decoration
aimed at ‘The Old West’.
Caliver Books
have just released a follow-up book – also
written and illustrated by Mike Blake – as a
companion volume:
Plains Indian War Shirts
and Warrior Society Regalia.
This is 120 pages
in length and is in hardback (though we are
looking at the preview PDF) and has 70 full
colour plates with lots of background material.
As for the contents, the Author says that
“War shirts were intended to attest to a warrior’s
achievements and were usually individual to that
man. A warrior would have more than one such
shirt in his
lifetime. As a
young warrior
gained in status
and his abilities
and achievements
increased, so too
did the honours
he could display.
The shirts worn
would represent
these stages of
power. However,
sometimes shirts
were copied,
and traded,
across the plains and beyond.”
The different
shirts – and other details – are given for
Jicarrila, Apache, Ute, Arapaho, Arikara,
Assiniboine, Blackfeet, Cheyenne, Crow,
Cree, Sioux and many more.
The shirts were usually made from elk or
deer skin and the book also includes guides

THIS MONTH
IN HISTORY
BATTLE OF
BLENHEIM
13 AUGUST 1704
The Battle was a major battle of
the War of the Spanish Succession.
The overwhelming Allied victory
ensured the safety of Vienna from
the Franco-Bavarian army, thus
preventing the collapse of the
reconstituted Grand Alliance. The
battlefield stretched for nearly 6
km and the French right rested
on the village of Blenheim and
the terrain was difficult for the
attackers. The French lost the
battle for a number of reasons
(including hubris, indiscipline
and poor dispositions) with over
27,000 casualties. Although the
war continued for years, Blenheim
was the most decisive victory for
Marlborough (British) and Prince
Eugene of the Habsburg Empire
and thereby preserved the Grand
Alliance from collapse and led
to the Treaty of Ilbersheim with
Bavaria placed under Austrian
control.
