Sri B.V. Narasimha Swamy was already a leading
advocate at Salem, and an ardent participant in the
Feeedom struggle, when he came to Sri Bhagavan. This
must have been around 1929 i.e. about 7 years after
Bhagavan moved down from Skandasramam to the
present location. During that time there were not more
than four or five permanent inmates. During his stay,
B.V. Narasimha Swamy was inspired to write the bio-.
graphy of Bhagavan. He did a thorough job collecting
information from numerous devotees, and of course from
Sri Bhagavan also, and completed the work in English
within a few months. He was the pioneer ‘coloniser’ of
Palakothu! The Ashram did not have facilities for food
_ and stay for sadhaks involved only in dhyanasadhana.
Going to town for food was also a tiresome routine.
B.V. Narasimha Swamy made Palakothu, west of the
Ashram, his home and showed a simple way for many
others who settled down there for sadhana at Sri
Bhagavan’s feet. Sri Kunju Swami mentions in his
Reminiscences that B.V. Narasimha Swamy was keen to
learn the intricacies of Advaita Vedanta and had the great
fortune of being taught the Kaivalya Navanita, verse by
verse, by Sri Bhagavan. The instruction was completed in
one week. At a later time, Sri Bhagavan remarked, “the
traditional Maths teaching Vedanta through Tamil poetic
works, do so only after some years of manana (memo-
rizing the verses) by the student. However where is the
need for this process when it comes to persons of sharp-
ened intellect like Narasimha Swamy!”
