INTRODUCTORY NOTE
This study is a revised version of a
Ph.D.
thesis presented at Cambridge in 1969. It deals
with three distinct but related problems: the authorship of the
Eudemian Ethics;
the
relationship between the
Eudemian
and the
Nicomachean Ethics;
and the problem of the
‘common’ books. My central concern is with the second of these problems.
I wish to express my deep appreciation of the ungrudging help and advice given to me
by Mr John Easterling, who supervised my research at Cambridge from 1965 to 1968. My
debt to him, both throughout the period of my research, and in the succeeding years, has
been considerable. In addition to all his other help, he has taken a large share in the
reading of the proofs. I wish also to thank Dr Richard Walzer for his continuing
encouragement and support; like so many others, I have benefited much from his
hospitality and kindness. I am indebted to Professor D. J. Allan and Dr Geoffrey Lloyd for

Eudemian
