Preface
This book is based on a thesis submitted to the University of Bombay for
the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The title of the thesis was, '
The Anat-
taväda in the Suttapitaka'.
It was a voluminous thesis which had to be re-
duced to bearable proportions. In the process, important modifications
have been introduced and the material has been more fittingly rearranged.
Most of the people who have written on the
anattä
doctrine, have done
it after being thoroughly steeped in the mentality of later commentaries.
We preferred to go straight to the original sources and to study the texts
in their original setting. This book is the result of our endeavour. A perusal
of the quotations will bear out that we have read up all the sources, from
the first page to the last. Hence no opening is left for the accusation of pres-
enting only a partial view of the problem.
We are duty bound to acknowledge our debt of gratitude to the following
