Preface
This book is addressed to those who are interested in the human
personality, in emotional development, and in the formation of
the moral and religious conscience.
What does the mother-father polarity mean for the child and
the adult? What is its function in the genesis of emotional relation-
ships and in the establishment of ethical and religious attitudes?
If it differs, how does it differ for the two sexes and in different
cultures? Have the changes in society and in the relations between
men and women altered the meaning of this parental polarity? If
so, in what sense?
These are the questions that gave rise to the studies contained
here. Though the literature on this subject is bountiful, empirical
studies are rare.
We have tried to develop a new method that could furnish scien-
tifically justified answers to these questions. And we think that
our results can make a relevant contribution in this very complex
area, an area that is often passionately controversial and that is
of the highest importance for the future of humanity and religion.
We also believe that the data presented here are pertinent to the
concerns of the behavorial scientist, the clinician, the theologian,
and the educator.
Any scientific study is founded on hypotheses derived from
previous observations and experience. Indeed, the questions them-
selves are an essential part of any study. The first chapter therefore
explains at length the standpoint from which we approach the
object of our research. The research instrument we designed is
presented in the second chapter. It takes on its full significance in
the light of the theoretical presuppositions of the first chapter.
The following chapters consist of succinct accounts of the studies
performed with that instrument on various population groups.
