THE TRUTH
Rak-sar-ai, a Quicksilver dwarf, became obsessed
with the task of restoring the World Machine.
Turned mad, he totally convinced himself of the
fact that biological reproduction of humans and
their cattle is the very reason behind the
disruption of the World Machine fragile
mechanisms.
For that reason, and on the basis of his
rampaging madness, he decided to steal Lunar
Magic Chaos secrets in order to create a water-
transmissible
arcane
disease
useful
to
exterminate Grazelanders and their animals.
After innumerable attempts which costed him
the last scraps of his sanity and the integrity of
his body, he was finally successful in reaching
his goal. From a cave in which the sources of one
of the main Grazelands rivers can be found, he
constantly pours deadly Chaos germs into the
roiling waters.
But as usual, Chaos is not a tool easily
exploited for someone’s goals, albeit crazy ones.
And therefore the river suddenly turned red and
bloody, easily alerting Pure Horse People of the
impending doom.
Adventurers able to manage this story will
have a chance to divert such fate...
GLORANTHA: Rivers of Blood
is an adventure
for
RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha
in
which a group of Grazelanders are required by
their community to put a stop to a curse which
recently struck their homeland.
In the first part adventure hooks are provided
in order to engage the characters, together with
background information for the gamemaster to
use while the secrets of the story unfold. The
second part includes a random encounters table
to be used while the group travels wild
Grazelands plus the map of an ancient Mostali
cave, now turned into a dangerous place in
which the truth behind the curse can be found.
STORY HOOKS
The characters of this story are assumed to be a
group of young adventurers willing to help Pure
Horse People, nominally at least one Grazelander
and her friends, or a homogeneous group of
Grazelanders themselves. Heroes’ community
started facing dire problems in the last days, in
the form of rivers of their land suddenly turned
into a bloody red substance, able to rapidly kill
cattle and threaten the clan very survival.
Before the clan leaves the place, the characters
are required by their leaders to explore the
sources of the river in order to determine what
happened, and to try to stop the dangerous
phenomenon. Community’s shamans and priests
are in fact worried about the possibility of the
curse spreading to other water sources in
Grazelands, threatening the very essence and
life style of Pure Horse People.
GRAZELANDS
The map of Rak-sar-ai creepy cave is provided
below, together with his stat block and the
descriptions
of
the
various
areas.
The
gamemaster is recommended to place the grotto
in the hilly central Grazelands, but other places
according to specific campaigns necessities are
surely possible.
'Redlining' the heroes from their encampment
to the cave is an option, like instead roleplaying
the journey filling it with the events the
gamemaster should see fit. Another option is
using the following table to generate random
encounters.

The entrance of the cave is guarded by Rak-
sar-ai pet, a
Krarshtkid
domesticated using
Chaos magic. Although well-fed via the cave
rocks, it is always ready to enjoy softer
snacks.

This is the source of the river recently
turned into deadly blood. The pool is 3 ft.
deep on average, and counts as contact
poison, 2D10 potency. Water drips from the
ceiling, collects in the pool and then goes
underground before reaching the Grazelands.

Two
Gargoyles
created by the crazy
alchemist are stored here, programmed to
attack any non-Chaotic creature entering the
pool of area 2.

The mad dwarf can be normally found in
this vast laboratory busy with polluting the
river source (his stat block is reported in the
previous page). The room contains 10 cans of
foul-smelling chemicals, 10 cans of mostali
“food” and a couple of Lunar treatises on
Chaos and Illumination.

Rak-sar-ai treasure is stored here,
consisting of several Bronze ingots worth
1000 L. together with precious gems (other
800 L) and fine advanced metallurgy tools
worth 300 L.
