Sample answers and mark schemes

Task 1

Can describe what is happening in a picture and make simple speculations.

Student A

The photographs are similar because they both show people performing music. In the first photograph, people are playing music in the street. I think it’s in a big city because I can see lots of people around, and buildings. I suppose the people might be students, trying to earn a bit of money. I guess they’re playing well because some people are listening. They’re probably playing classical music because they have violins and other classical instruments. The second photo shows a music festival. It looks like quite a big festival because there’s a big stage, so I guess lots of people are watching and enjoying it. They’re probably playing rock music. One difference between the photographs is that in the first photograph there isn’t an audience for the musicians. People will probably stop and listen for a short while and then move away, whereas in the second photograph a lot of people must have bought tickets for the festival, so they will probably watch the whole show. I think different people would enjoy these forms of entertainment. In the first photograph, probably people going to and from work would enjoy the music because it would cheer them up and make their journey more fun. The festival is more for music fans who want to watch a particular band. I’d enjoy both forms of entertainment. It’s nice to have music in the street, but I’d probably prefer to go to a festival.

Student B

The photographs both show people watching different kinds of entertainment. In the first photograph, some children are watching an entertainer make things with balloons. I think maybe it’s a birthday party. The children are all very interested in what the entertainer is doing, so they must be enjoying the show. I used to love watching entertainers like this when I was young. In the second photograph, a family is sitting together and I think they must be watching TV as one of the children has a remote control. They look happy, so maybe it’s a comedy show or a reality TV show – something funny. It’s interesting because there are people of different ages there, from grandparents down to young people, and they’re all enjoying the same show. I think for the children in the first photograph, entertainment is important because it’s fun and it will make their party memorable. For their parents, it’s probably also good that someone is keeping them happy! Entertainers can also give children ideas and new experiences, which is good. For the family, I think the entertainment is important because it’s something they can all do together, so it probably brings them closer together as a family. Maybe if it’s an interesting programme, they might discuss it together, too. I think television is important for older people who might not be able to go out very much. It can bring entertainment into their home. I watch TV sometimes, but in general I prefer to go out to concerts and shows.

Students A and B

1

A:              I think there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of a music festival in our neighbourhood. One big advantage would be for young people. Do you agree?

B:              Yes, I agree with you. Most young people love music, and it would be great for them to have this form of entertainment close to where they live. I guess that the cost for the local community might be a disadvantage. Maybe the community would have to pay for more traffic police and rubbish collections, that kind of thing.

A:              Well, I’m not sure about that. I don’t think it would be very much. But another disadvantage of a festival is crime. There might be a lot of crimes.

B:              That’s true. People often get their bags or money stolen at festivals, so that wouldn’t be good for the neighbourhood. What about the environment? Do you think a festival would be bad for the environment?

A:              Yes, I do. One disadvantage of festivals is that they create a lot of rubbish. For example, a lot of people leave their tents at the festival when they go home, so someone has to clear it all up.

B:              Yes, you’re right. There are lots of advantages too, though. A big advantage would be for local shops, restaurants and hotels because a lot of people might use them, so they would earn money.

A:              I’m not sure about hotels, because most people camp at festivals, but I agree that people would use shops and restaurants, so they would make a lot of money.

2

A:              Overall, in my opinion a festival would be good for our neighbourhood because it would be exciting and it would make the place feel more lively. What do you think?

B:              Yes, I agree with you. I think there would be a few disadvantages, of course, but there would be more advantages. In fact, I would definitely love to have a festival in my neighbourhood!
