Including COP in Designs
The Common On-Chip Processor functionality can be very useful for debugging systems. However, to
use this feature, certain signals must be accessible. Therefore, access to these signals must be included
in the design.
To facilitate board debugging, several key signals should be pulled out from the part, either to test points
or to a 16-pin header (2x8). This header should be composed of .025in. square posts at .100in. spacing
and is shown below in Figure 1. These pins enable COP functions to be performed on the system under
test (SUT) and is used by third party tool providers to attach their emulator products to PowerPC
Microprocessors in the MPC6XX and MPC7XX families. Figure 1 below shows the 16-pin header as it
should appear on the printed circuit board. Pin #14 (blacked out in the diagrams below) is the key locator
pin for the connector. Depending on the emulator being used, the key location may need to be de-
populated (ie. emulator connector may not have a receptacle at this location).

Connection. The VDD connection on pin #6 should be at the same voltage as the OVdd of the
microprocessor and is used by emulator tools to determine which voltage level to drive their output pins.
The VDD pin should be capable of sourcing 16mA. The “I/O” column in Table 1 shows “I - input” and “O -
output” from the emulator tools perspective.
