Checkstop state on PowerPC
Q:
What purpose does the 'checkstop' state serve on the PowerPC devices?
A.
If the ME bit is not set and the processor takes an exception then the processor will enter the
checkstop state. This is effectively the 'double bus fault' which is present on other architecture's.
Even though the checkstop state is non-recoverable, 3rd party debug tools (interfaced to the
MPC device via the JTAG/COP pins) can scan the device and determine the cause of the check-
stop.
