INTRODUCTION
This book will facilitate the
creation of a summoning ritual for
modern game settings.
Each summoning ritual is
unique. It may be determined by the
GM ahead of time (recommended), or it
may be rolled up during play, with the
players taking notes while the GM
reads the results (takes a few minutes,
and might require the GM to do some
on-the-fly customization).
Such rituals are not found in old
books collecting dust on shelves, or
etched upon stone tablets.
Instead, they reveal themselves
in the heat of the moment: an

unplugged printer turns itself on and
prints out a single page containing the
ritual; or a pen picks itself up and
writes the instructions on a page; or a
dead man lifts his hand, dips his finger
in blood, and writes the ritual upon the
wall.
Each summoning ritual is
elaborate; merely acquiring the
materials for the ritual may require
research, investigation, violence,
and/or the use of magic. However, the
rewards are likely to be considerable.
Characters attempting a major
task (infiltrate a cult, destroy a mighty
enemy) will find that the ritual's
rewards might make the impossible
possible.
The ritual's description will only
include the tasks that must be
performed; the rewards are hinted at,
but not specified.
CUSTOMIZATION
These rituals work best if the
player characters have had some
experience in the world. Brand new,
first-level characters won't get as
much out of the ritual process, and the
rewards might be too significant, given
their level.
Player characters who have
interacted with the game world, met
with NPCs, made friends and enemies,

and explored various locations, will be
more engaged with the ritual process.
This engagement becomes more
pronounced if the GM modifies the
results slightly, by attaching proper
nouns.
For example, if the player
characters have ever encountered a
doctor, and the random table gives a
result including a doctor, then the GM
should assign that doctor to the role.
"It says that you must steal a used
scalpel from Dr. Lewis."
If the random table result
includes references to a hospital or
patient, then Dr. Lewis should get
plugged into that result as well. "Then,
you must break into the hospital where
Dr. Lewis works, and..."
