McNevin hung up the phone and stood there looking like a man on thin ice; one misstep and
he’d vanish. Swallowed whole.
Cncerned, Patek swiped up the emergency transport icon on his screen. “Casualties?” he
asked.”Do I need to call for a rapid evac?”
McNevin blinked, glanced at the operations monitor, then at his colleague. “No,” he replied.
“Just the opposite; our Agents hit Sun Pharma’s data center like an orbital strike. They
gutted the place and ratted SP’s entire network.”
“So that’s good. Right?”
McNevin looked back at the phone. “That was Upstairs. The C-Suite wants to keep the
momentum going.”
Patek frowned. “Keep the momentum - - What does that even mean?”
“It means the Board decided Sun Pharma’s attack constituted direct and overt aggression
against us. Legal insists we have a solid claim to respond with – I’m quoting here –
“additional preemptive defensive actions” in order to protect our corporate interests.”
“Translate that to plain English.”
McNevin looked at the phone again. “It means the Board invoked Article Nine.”
“Holy shi---“ Patek shook his head to clear it. “Article Nine. Really?”
“Really. Our orders are to deploy Direct Action units in order to assert control over Sun-
Pharma territory. Field Agents now have full access to all corporate tactical assets.”
McNevin paused, took a breath. “Starting with the shōtengai in the Neutral Zone - and
ending at the Sun Pharma corporate campus.”
“We’re going after the SP headquarters?” Patek’s spine iced. “A hostile takeover?”
McNevin nodded. “That’s the word from on high. Go big or go home. Any questions?”
Patek turned to his workstation. The tac-net for the Enenra 3 cell was alive with comms
chatter: Agents forwarding resupply lists, requesting reconnaissance footage, projected
transport routes. Cells of the elite corporate operatives were requisitioning new tactical units
from the security division: fire teams, combat drones, heavy support elements… It was
enough firepower to invade a small country. Or take over a rival corporation.
Numb, Patek approved their requests. All of them.
As he finished, Patek swiveled in his chair and looked his supervisor in the eye. “I do have
one question.”
“What?”
“Did I just start another corporate war?”
