If you are reading this, it means you found my notebooks. Most likely, I am no longer of this
world, or any world for that matter. These books were originally my research journals, but later
became my diary. They chronicle my discoveries, and the rise and fall of Illeria.
Though I hardly believe it myself, ten short years ago, King Paris ruled Avon, there was peace,
and all was right with the world. Back then, magic was an esoteric subject. It was an academic
art, like music or history. We always hoped that some day magic would have a practical use,
to be as useful as alchemy, but that was never the real purpose. We wanted to understand the
workings of the universe. Most of us were employed by nobles. We acted as advisors, and as
status symbols. I worked for Lord Berowne, who retained three arcane scholars. The nobles
would occasionally give us small problems to solve; mostly, however, we were left to our own
devices.
Kind Paris’s death left a power vacuum, and lead to a bloody war of succession. His youngest
son, Balthazar, rose to power by being the scariest of the litter. I could write a novel on that
war. The war took its toll on Balthazar, though. A near death from an assassin’s arrow left him
with a profound sense of paranoia, and shaped many of his future policies. He began rounding
up those that he mistrusted, and established forced labor camps to put them in. It should be no
surprise that a small faction soon rebelled. It was lead by Cicero, the right hand man of the
dead prince Montano, but it really could have been anyone.
Since the war of succession began, there was talk amongst the arcane scholars as to whether
we should take sides. Really, at the beginning, there was nothing we could do. However, during
the war, the scholar Ophelia discovered that there was a world beyond our own. She called this
the “spirit world,” and it seemed to be where magic came from. The spirit world is a world
unlike ours. The laws that govern our world seem not to apply there. It’s like a dream that
you never awake from. You discover that you have a second body, and it is through this body
that you can traverse the spirit world. This breakthrough allowed the elder scholars to unlock
the full potential of magic. We soon realized magic could be a far more powerful weapon than
any sword or bow, and those scholars sympathetic to Cicero began to talk of how to use their
newfound power.
The Battle of the Roses will forever be remembered as the day the world changed. Cicero’s
broken and battered army was on the run, and Balthazar sent a small but elite regiment of
cavalry to wipe them out. Everyone expected this to be a one-sided battle. However, Cicero’s
soldiers were assisted by five of the oldest and wisest arcane scholars. As arrows turned around
to shoot their owners, horses became spooked and kicked off their masters, and fireballs darted
through the air, Balthazar’s regiment was crushed. Though Cicero’s forces sustained heavy
losses, and three of the scholars were killed, these details were lost to history. Magic had left
the ivory tower, and understanding its power seemed the key to winning the war. This victory
may have turned the tide of the war, but it also sealed our fate.
Before I knew what was happening, large men appeared at my door, tied me up, and placed
a bag over my head. When it was removed, I found myself on the prison island of Illeria,
surrounded by a dozen or so fellow scholars. A large man told us that King Balthazar wanted
to use us to develop weapons for his generals. He said that any who refused to cooperate
would be executed. And thus, we began spending day after day, slaving away in our makeshift
laboratories and our makeshift libraries. Conditions were not always safe, and we soon found
ourselves setting fire to our laboratories, and unleashing monsters on the island. We turned an
art made for creating knowledge into a tool made for inflicting human misery.

At night they kept us locked away with the other prisoners. Illeria, you see, is a desert island,
and its red sands are rich in many strange materials which have important alchemical purposes.
The Illerian prison was originally a forced labor camp for collecting such materials, and the
research facility was added on later. At first I thought I would be skinned alive by my fellow
prisoners, but I soon came to realize that the thugs on this island were profoundly superstitious.
They feared us, and would not touch us. The other scholars and I leveraged this power. We
brought peace and community to where there was once fighting.
As we continued to study the art of magic, the breakthroughs of Ophelia and others snowballed.
We figured out how to strengthen weapons, how to toughen skin, and how to call animals from
nothing. I myself began by researching how to call creatures, and eventually learned how to
make steel walk on its own. Many of these secrets are written within these pages.
Though every other discovery was eventually given to Balthazar’s generals, the spirit world
remained a secret. Ophelia had made us promise that we would keep this a secret, that only
scholars would know about. It was so easily hidden, and so miraculous and beautiful, that we
never wanted to see it become a weapon. Little did we know what was to come.
As rumors began floating that Balthazar had crushed the rebellion, the political prisoners
became nervous as to what would happen to everyone. Soon, we began plotting to overthrow the
guards and claim Illeria as our own. Knowing we would be useless without weapons, the other
scholars and I began teaching our fellow prisoners how to use magic. We even showed them the
spirit world, and how to tap into its great source of power. When the uprising came, the guards
did not stand a chance.
As a last act of loyalty to Balthazar, or perhaps just because of spite, the guards destroyed
most of the provisions. This included food, water stores, and the materials that could be used to
escape back to the mainland. We know how to recreate the materials we’d need to escape, but
it will be a long and resource-intense process. Illeria is such a harsh place, with so little food
and water, that it was obvious that many of us would not escape. When this got out, we began
fighting amongst ourselves. What’s worse, now that the prisoners had learned to use magic,
they no longer feared us, and the prison gangs of old began to reform. Soon, there was nothing
but anarchy and death.
