Not just for young kids!
Tomorrow is April 22nd which means that I don’t go to school. I go to work because it’s Take Your Child to Work Day. A lot of my friends think that this is only a day for really young children. They think it’s childish or boring to spend the day at work with their mum or dad, although they get on well enough at home. In my opinion, it’s even more useful forteenagers like me than for younger kids. Let me tell you why.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, it dates back to 1993, when it was called Take Your Daughter to Work Day. Back then, a lot of girls probably only expected to work in a full-time job until they had their first child. After that, it was more popular for them to find part-time work instead. So, the idea was to encourage girls to think about having an interesting career too. In 2003, it became Take Your Child to Work day but even before that parents often took their sons to work as well as their daughters.
I was eight when I first went to a Take Your Child to Work Day. My mum taught at the same school I went to so I didn’t go to work with her. I was there every day! My dad was a journalist and he took me to his office, which I loved. It was very noisy and very exciting. Dad was the only person there with children so I felt very special and everyone gave me sweets and other little gifts.
As I got older, my dad took me out with him to interview people for stories for the newspaper. I used to go with him to people’s homes and sit quietly while he interviewed them. He always used to say that people were much more open and trusting when he took me along. I think some people gave him more information than perhaps they should.
Unfortunately, dad’s newspaper went out of business two years ago. He was out of work for a while and now he works at home so I don’t go to work with him! Mum also changed her job. She’s a university lecturer. Her subject is English Literature. The university is great. I can’t wait to be a student. Last year, I spent the day going to lectures. Not my mum’s. I prefer subjects like History and Economics. They were really interesting and helped me to decide what I want to study when I leave school in two years’ time.
The only disadvantage is that a lot of the staff bring their children, too and they’re all much younger than me. When they were all busy, they asked me to babysit all the other children. Luckily, there was an empty computer room so I found some online games for the children to play. One thing I have definitely learned from Take Your ...
