Greetings, and welcome to issue 53 of
Mythic Magazine!
This issue adds a new
layer to Mythic’s Discovering Meaning
rules, and Mythic pulls up a chair at your
board gaming table.
In “Discovery Prompts”, Discovering
Meaning is given a new dimension by not only
rolling to answer your question, but rolling to
ask the question in the first place. It’s a way of
turning a generic “What’s this monster look
like?” into a more flavorful “Why will this
monster haunt my dreams forever?”
We know Mythic can play roleplaying
games. It’s literally born to be a Gamemaster!
But there’s that whole other world, adjacent to
our roleplaying universe, where board games
live and breathe. Mythic wants in on this too,
and “Mythic As A Board Game Opponent”
offers rules and suggestions for how to use
Mythic mechanics you’re already familiar with
and port them to your board games. A game
needs three players and you only have two?
No problem! Want to play alone? Solo board
gaming, make it so!

Discovery Prompts
A QUEST FOR QUESTIONS
Rolling on Meaning tables to interpret details
in an adventure is a familiar strategy to Mythic
Players. Need to know what an NPC looks like,
what a spell does, or how the monster acts? Find
an appropriate Meaning table, roll up some words,
and interpret an answer.
The questions Discovering Meaning answers
might better be described as needs. You need to
know what the creature looks like. You need to
know what the spell does. The question itself
doesn’t impart any Context of its own, other
than the need it conveys. “What does the spell
do?” Roll on the Spell Effects Meaning table to
find out.
What if, however, the way you ask the question
brings Context of its own. That will put a twist
on your answer. For instance, instead of “What
does the spell do?” you could ask, “How is the
spell going to create an obstacle for me?” or
“What primal fear of my PC does this spell stir?”
All of these questions lead to the answer
of “What does the spell do?”, but the last two
questions include additional Context that link
the answer to an obstacle your PC will have to
overcome or a personal fear they must grapple with.
A JOURNALING
PROMPT VARIATION
Context prompts aren’t
entirely new to Mythic, they’ve
been in previous issues of
Mythic Magazine
one way
or another. For an in-depth
look at generating random
prompts, check out issue
#30’s “Mythic As A Solo
Journaling Game”.
Discovery Prompts differ
in that they aren’t meant to
be the launching point of a
journal entry, they’re intended
to provide extra flavor to
Discovering Meaning. They
also aren’t as random as the
prompts from issue #30.
Still, there are enough
similarities that if you find
Context Prompts interesting,
issue #30 is a good resource.
Issue #43 also includes a
treatment of Prompts in
“Writing Fiction With Mythic”,
although this again is from the point of view of
producing longer, more detailed answers.

Discovering Meaning with flavorful questions
that provide adventure-generating, narrative-
growing Context.

Prompts, plus the Random result to generate an
unlisted Prompt.
Choose, or roll, from the Discovery Prompts
tables then answer the question by rolling a pair of
Keywords from a Meaning table, such as Actions.
Interpret an answer.

These Discovery Prompts can be used to create
the first Scenes of a new solo adventure. You can
think of this as an adventure starter, possibly
replacing using a Random Event.
