he dogged refusal
of some printed
publications to lie
down and die despite
the confident predictions
of Internet pundits
continues to baffle many
and to confound even
more. The simple fact seems to be that there is
still a place in many people’s lives for printed
publications, and this being so we, the editorial
team, are continually obliged to address the
vexed question as to what to put in them.
The answer to this, one would think, would
be obvious. We should
fi
ll it with material and
information that is not available for free Online,
and that consequently
fi
lling pages with ‘news’
items that may have been accessible online for
more than a week is not necessarily the best use
of our space.
So you would think – but in a recent survey our
targeted demographic (you) confirmed that
news and reviews are of enormous interest
to the readership, and are second only to the
perennial demand for ‘How To’, inevitably the
foremost request, and one we endeavour to cater
for through our informed feature builds, and
by presenting our step-by-step articles clearly,
logically, and without allowing design trends to
compromise clarity. So we continue to offer a
monthly overview of new and recent items, but
what do we include, and when, and why?
Our News pages try to provide a brief overview,
including as much as possible, while not
plunging into needless depths. They are
compiled largely from press releases received,
with the gaps
fi
lled in by our studious and
diligent team who scour the Internet to provide
a precis for those who prefer hard copy. Priority
is given where manufacturers have taken the
time and trouble to notify us, and we try to
incorporate as much as possible into the space
as practicable. Of course in order to be as up-to-
date as possible we leave the News pages to the
last minute, and by this means are able to cut
the inevitable gap between print and digital to
something plausible.
I am always delighted when readers inform
me that they found out about a new release
through the News pages of this magazine. As
I sign off on this, the last issue of our forty-
fi
fth volume, I am looking forward to printed
magazines – or
SAM
at least – remaining
relevant for many years to come.
