WhaT is This Module?
It is a dungeon delve into the body of a sleeping jötunn who makes up a
mountain range in Norway. A crazed explorer and treasure seeker has stolen
an artifact believing it to be the key to a vast treasure within the mountain
range. When this artifact was brought into the mountain range, the jötunn
started waking up, including its normal internal biological defenses. The
crazed explorer ended up being partially digested leaving the artifact
(“Hrungnir’s Heart”) somewhere inside Hrungnir’s bowels. Should the Player
Characters unlock the treasure, the jötunn will awake and cause all kinds of
problems for the rest of Europe.

baCkground
Who is Hrungnir? (pronounced “Rung-ner”) Hrungnir is the largest of jötunn
who was so great and tall that he touched the heavens. According to legend
he challenged Odin to a race over a disagreement over whose horse was
faster. Odin’s horse, Sleipnir, was much faster than Hrungnir’s horse, Gullfaxi.
This enraged Hrungnir who became drunk and abusive while partying it up
in Ásgard. He threatened to destroy the gods themselves. As a result, Thor
challenged him to a duel and Hrungnir was ultimately killed.
After being killed, Hrungnir’s body fell to earth. When the sun shone on
his body, he turned to stone forming part of the mountains of Norway.
When Mjolnir struck Hrungnir, a piece of his heart fell to the earth and was
recovered by a cult. These followers of the Old Ways of Norway believed
that, should the Heart of Hrungnir ever be brought to the mountains where
Hrungnir lay, a great gift would be bestowed upon the people of Norway.
Over the centuries, it became lost to legend.
Fast forward many centuries, Christianity has won the day in Norway and
Hrungir’s Heart lies in a Cabinet of Curiosities (the 17th century pre-cursor to a
museum) of a wealthy protestant speculator and investor in London England,
Master John Ostergaard.
John Ostergaard’s lineage goes back to the Danish conquest of England.
As he has ancestral ties to Norway, he has amassed a vast treasure trove of
artifacts from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. John Ostergaard is an
amateur scholar and archaeologist about Nordic myths and legends.
Unfortunately for John Ostergaard, the Old Ways are alive and well and a cult
has taken an interest in the long-lost Heart of Hrungnir. The cult has made
personal threats against John Ostergaard and his family. John’s problem is
that he no longer has it in his possession.
It was stolen by an explorer and would-be treasure hunter, Francois Arquette.
Francois has studied much of the myths and legends of Europe. Upon
learning that a gift to Norway may be unlocked using Hrungnir’s Heart,
Francois spent a considerable amount of money to locate John Ostergaard.
Under the guise of mutual scholarship, Francois befriended John to get closer
to the Hrungnir’s Heart and learn the location of Hrungnir’s body.
This is where the characters come in.
