T he Horror
of HUntley
House
hey say tragedy is the heart of every
good ghost story, and Huntley House
has seen its share of misery. Those who
brave its crumbling, sagging walls return
with wild tales of shifting rooms, strange
anachronisms, and half-seen entities...
“The Horror of Huntley House” is a horror
adventure of investigation and mystery in
a derelict haunted house. It can be played
with the
Savage Worlds Horror Companion
archetypes, or players may create their own
investigators. By default it takes place in the
modern era, but with some adjustment it
could be suitable for heroes of earlier times.
Unlike typical
Savage Worlds
scenarios, the
players are called upon to use their powers
of observation and deduction far more than
their heroes’ abilities. In fact, dice rolling is
an infrequent occurrence.
The adventure is divided into three sections.
House of Woe
explains the dark history of
Huntley House and offers tips for running
this unique adventure, while
Welcome Home
T
describes the various rooms and haunts
within. The third section,
Memento Mori
presents an optional variant that places the
investigators in the haunting itself, while
Haunts
profiles of various threats the heroes
might face while investigating the house.
A full map of Huntley House is located on
the last page of this adventure.

HOUSE OF WOE
CONTENT WARNING
Due to the tragic origins of Huntley
House’s ghosts, this adventure contains
references to suicide, mental health, and
mistreatment of minors.
untley House stands empty and
forlorn in a old residential district
of a major port city. It was built in
1882 by a British shipping magnate named
Charles Huntley, who settled in the area
with his wife, Elizabeth. Soon after the
house was built, Elizabeth announced that
she was expecting a child. Charles bought
an expensive grandfather clock to mark the
beginning of their new family together.
Elizabeth delivered their daughter, Mary,
in the Master bedroom. However, Mary only
lived for a few weeks, dying of an unknown
illness in her mother’s arms.
Distraught, Elizabeth confined herself to the
upper floor and refused to be seen by anyone

other than Charles and their serving staff.
Gossip flew in town, as people reported seeing
her gazing down from behind curtained
windows, her eyes hollow and mournful.
Desperate to raise his wife’s spirits, Charles
adopted William, an 8-year-old orphan son
of a town businessman. William had severe
mental issues which caused friction in the
house, despite Charles’ best efforts to create
a loving environment.
Before long, dead animals began to turn up
in the yard. Confronting William only caused
the boy to become more devious. Knives and
poisons began to disappear from drawers. A
neighbor’s dog went missing. Then William
found Mary’s grave and dug her up, dressing
her corpse like a doll in the empty nursery.
This was more than the family could bear.
Elizabeth snapped, hanging herself from
the chandelier over the spiral stairs in the
landing. That is where Charles found her
when he came home. Searching the house in
a red rage, Charles found William scuttling

strangled him to death. He then returned his
infant’s body back to her resting place and
dug a grave for his wife. He buried William
in a shallow grave in the basement. Then
Charles went to his study, set the house on
fire, loaded a pistol from his locked case, then
shot himself in the head.
Charles’ brother, Jeremiah, a bachelor
and fellow owner of the shipping business,
inherited the house. He had the badly burned
portions repaired and moved in, keeping
everything as it was—that is, except for the
grandfather clock. Despite having been left
unwound for months, it doggedly chimed
every half hour. Jeremiah tried removing the
mechanism to no avail, and in the first signs
of his oncoming madness, smashed a hole in
the house’s plaster and sealed the clock inside
the wall.
No one knows exactly what happened
next, but when letters to him began to go
unanswered police found Jeremiah had
drowned himself in the upstairs bathtub.
It has now been decades since the horror
that befell Huntley House. In the ensuing
years, all record of what happened here has
been lost or forgotten.
Warning:
this is not a typical adventure. The
heroes rarely encounter physical danger.
Instead, they’ll need to pay close attention
to the ghostly clues in the house to piece
together a dreadful mystery.
Beginning at midnight (or some other hour
of your choosing), the grandfather clock
buried inside the wall of the study chimes
twelve times. The four ghosts of Huntley
House then manifest one after the other,
reliving moments of their lives attached to
strong emotions and unresolved conflicts
(see the
Active Ghosts
sidebar on page 4).
Each ghost waxes and wanes, its presence in
the house lasting for about 30 minutes before
fading out once more. After a brief time of
quiet—around 15 minutes long—the next
ghost gradually emerges for its phase.
