ne constant in the world of
railways is that nothing lasts
forever, and this has sadly been
proved to be the case in my
former home town of Stafford
with the sad news that the former
engine shed – 5C to some of you – is to be
demolished. It was refurbished in the 1990s
for use as industrial units and later for use
as a college training centre. A new bespoke
college building will be built on the site in
the next few years. Its razing to the ground
will mean that Stafford’s railway heritage is,
in essence, gone, with the former Bagnall
works (later GEC Castle Engineering) and
both mechanical signal boxes also having
gone in recent years.
This event, and John Squire’s letter in
Mailbag (p46‑47) got me thinking. Mr Squire
makes the interesting point that if we don’t
keep such aspects of our railway heritage
alive in print, they’ll be lost forever as those
who remember them progressively pass
away. I couldn’t agree more, and this aim has
been the task of railway historians since the
first retrospective histories started to emerge
many decades ago. We also received a
second letter on the subject which suggests
that those who weren’t present at the time
of steam aren’t qualified to write historical
articles – a sentiment I would fervently
disagree with. The basis of this is that we
inadvertently used a picture of Bidston depot
in place of Chester Northgate.
Now, in this case I hold up my hands.
A writer can only be as good as his or her
sources, and said image was labelled as
Chester Northgate when submitted to us.
Now, do I remember Chester Northgate?
No, I don’t, nor do I know it from every
conceivable angle. In fact, the majority of
sheds in our Shedcode Special series will
have long been gone by the time their entries
are written, so we have to use a variety of
sources to write their histories. Many sheds
have never had a comprehensive history
published, making the task even harder – in
this respect I would thank the Engine Shed
Society for its advice during a recent search.
But does that deter us? No, it does not.
Yes, we will make the occasional error,
but historians from the start have made
mistakes, so I feel as though I’m in good
company. We risk losing our heritage forever
– our preserved railways fill that gap to a
point, but in reality, they are a tiny fraction
of what originally existed. By the time the
series ends, I will be in my dotage… but I will
have the satisfaction of knowing that this
magazine helped to keep our heritage alive.
