Introduction
Running Out of Time
is a cyberpunk survival role
playing game (RPG). You and 2-5 friends play make-
believe, creating a shared narrative of a group of
individuals doing what they can to get more Time in a
dystopian metropolis in a not so distant future. If they
run out of Time they die, and everything costs minutes,
hours, days. The rules help to keep the story you tell
consistent, interesting and challenging.
You play as a runner, a person running out of Time and
doing almost anything to get more: mercenaries doing
corporations’ dirty jobs, rebels stealing the rich and
powerful’s Time, revolutionaries trying to subvert the
system while playing by its rules or anything you can
imagine. The thing is you have very little Time to
decide. The clock is ticking.
This book contains all the rules players and Referees
need to play, as well as tools and resources to create
adventures and situations. However, it does assume
you know what a role playing game (RPG) is and have
a basic understanding of how to play one. If you don’t,
a quick Google search will provide you many answers
and watching a few actual plays on YouTube clarifies
many things as well. But in the end, the best way to
learn is playing with someone who has played before
(use the internet)!
Running Out of Time
is inspired by all the cyberpunk
movies, comics and series I ever consumed
(Bladerunner,
Ghost in the Shell, Ready Player One, In
Time, Minority Report, Akira
and others), as well as
games (Into
the Odd, Electric Bastionland, Mausritter,
Into the Bronze, Cyberpunk 2020, Retropunk, Neon City
Overdrive, Android
and others). I’ve taken and mixed
that with my own experiences to make a quick, simple
and resourceful cyberpunk survival RPG!
Attention
This game contains themes and
mechanics
simulating
events
appearing in cyberpunk and horror
movies. These are not representative
of real issues people live with. Things
are far more complex in real life and
can’t be reduced to die rolls and
gameplay.
1 - Create a Runner
You’re a runner. You have very little Time left to live and do everything you can as fast as
possible. You want more Time and do whatever it takes to get it. But you have principles (do
you?)—how will you spend your last minutes?
1.1 - Attributes
Your runner has three attributes
determining their basic strengths and
weaknesses.
Strength (STR): Physical prowess
and endurance.
Dexterity (DEX): Agility and hand-
eye coordination.
Willpower (WIL): Force of will and
charisma.
For each of these attributes roll
2d6+3
in
order, swapping any two.
1.3 - Time
Roll 1d6 determining how many days you
have left. This is the game’s currency, so
use it well: when it runs out you die.
1.4 - Background
Cross reference your HP and Resources
values on the Background table determining
what your runner was before they decided
to get more Time on their own terms.
If desired, you can create your own
Background. Come up with a past
occupation and two related items and
you’re set!
1.2 - Hit Protection (HP)
Roll 1d6 for your HP—how much damage
your runner shrugs off before actually
getting wounded.

could cost your life. Your runners starts
with:
Appropriate attire.
A lifewatch.
Two background items.
Your choice of weapon (see 3.3).
A standard phone.
If your runner’s highest Attribute is:
9 or 8: roll another Background
taking either Item A or B.
7 or less: take both.
