Great Raids
D-DAY’S OPERATION OVERLORD
is one of the most pivotal events of WW II
and can be characterized as the greatest raid in modern history. The buildup to
that day was staggering: as more than 150,000 Allied soldiers prepared to storm
the beaches on June 6, 1944, thousands of airmen flying bombers and fighters
had been busy hammering away at ground targets and clearing the skies of
bandits during the weeks before that fateful day. Out of the 11,000 aircraft flown,
4,000 were fighters and many of those were the formidable P-51 Mustang,
which performed many of the dangerous low-level strafing and ground attacks.
In our feature story “Mustangs Over Normandy,” James Busha takes you in the
cockpit with several D-Day P-51 pilots who reported that danger still lurked
everywhere, even though the Allies had achieved air superiority over the
French coast.
This month marks the 80th anniversary of Operation Chastise, the audacious
RAF raid to destroy three dams in the Ruhr valley by 617 Squadron. The 1955
epic British war film “The Dam Busters” immortalized this attack against the
enemy’s industrial base and forever etched it in the public mind. One of the
keys to its success was the innovative bouncing bombs that were used. In our
story “Dams Raid,” modern jet fighter pilot Clive Rowley, MBE, RAF (Ret.) tells
the story of John “Hoppy” Hopgood, one of the heroic pilots who flew a specially
modified Type 464 Lancaster on that harrowing mission. This feature conveys a
poignant mix of emotions: triumph over striking a successful blow against the
enemy and the harsh reality of lives lost in the process of delivering it.
