For many years, every time I visited the Kbely aviation museum in
Prague, I found myself admiring a rather exceptional exhibit. It was
a complete front section of a P-47D Thunderbolt, fully open
without panels. This preserved segment of fuselage provided
perfect information about structure, colour scheme and
weathering of the engine section of this aircraft. Unfortunately this,
for all modelers being a very attractive exhibit, was recently
removed from display into the museum depository. Over the years
I firmly decided that I had to reproduce this on my future build of
Hasegawa’s kit in 1:32 scale. This decision was supported by the
aftermarket company Aires, who produces a resin detailed set
showing the whole engine section. The final impulse to start my
build is the book titled “Gabby – life of fighter”. Upon finishing the
reading I was firmly persuaded, that I have to produce my model
in the livery of the P-47 used by Francis Stanley Gabreski – the
most successful American fighter pilot in the European theatre of
operations.
