The 'Century of the Soldier' series covers the period of military history
c. 1618-1721, the 'golden era' of Pike and Shot warfare. This time frame
has been seen by many historians as a period of not only great social
change, but of fundamental developments within military matters.
This is the period of the 'military revolution: the development of standing
armies, the widespread introduction of black powder weapons and a
greater professionalism within the culture of military personnel.
The series examines the period in a greater degree of detail than has hitherto been attempted, and has
a very wide brief, with the intention of covering all aspects of the period from the battles, campaigns,
logistics and tactics, to the personalities, armies, uniforms and equipment.
About the author:
Professor Michael Fredholm von Essen
is an historian and former military analyst who has published
extensively on the history, defence strategies, security policies, and energy sector developments of Eurasia.
He is currently the Head of Research and Development at IRl, an independent research institute. Educated
at Uppsala, Stockholm, and Lund Universities, Michael Fredholm von Essen has lectured, including
during conferences and as visiting professor, at numerous institutions and universities around the world.
He is the author of a large number of books, articles, and academic papers, including

About the artist:
Sergey
Shamenkov
graduated from the Academy of Arts in Lviv. He is a sculptor, author and illustrator
who specialises in uniformology, military and costume history. His principal area of interest is the study of
the Swedish army of Charles XII. When not painting, he is involved in re-enactment, depicting Ukrainian
and Swedish units of the 17th and 18th centuries.
